Girlfriends
Well, I was sitting here diligently working on my "Internship Summary Paper" and also watching Rachael Ray. It happens to be an episode about her and her friends. They just mentioned how they met through men and that some of the men "went away" and they stayed friends. I couldn't help but reminisce about my own girlfriends. I really do have some of the best. This was a conversation I also had with my mentees last weekend. As 7th graders, they have a lot of drama about boys and friendships. We talked about how no matter how many boys come and go, you should always value your girlfriends. They are there for you no matter what. Sometimes you make really awful mistakes and there are hard times, but when you have true friends, they will stick by your side no matter what.
I am very lucky to have several friends that have been in my life for 20+ years. It's awesome. I want to devote this blog to them. My first and very best friend is April. She and I have been friends since we were about 4 years old at Sunderland Elementary. We've been through sleepovers, boyfriends, fights, and makeups. We've been roommates and I definitely consider her family my second family. She has gotten me through some awful breakups, supported me through my depression, and celebrated with me through happy times. I love that 26 years later, we can still call each other to hang out, cry, or laugh. I think it is pretty rare to have friends that stick by your side this long and I am so thankful to have her.
Another amazing lady in my life is Casey. Her and I have been in and out of one another's lives for about 20 years. We met in Middle School and had an instant connection. Her Mom passed away from leukemia when we were in 7th grade and I just remember wanting to help her get through it. We spent time sneaking drinks and trying to be grown up in middle school to sleeping over at one another's houses and also becoming like sisters. We lost touch after high school, but have since reunited via Facebook...isn't technology wonderful? I am so thankful that even after all of these years, we can pick up where we left off at any time. I love getting to know her husband and her beautiful kids. We have been through a lot as well and I love that we can support each other through it.
Cassie is another girlfriend that I've had in my life since middle school. Her, April and I were pretty much inseparable in high school. Cassie and I have always shared a love of art, music and culture. April and I hoped that she would be our roommate at college, but Cass decided to go her own way and stay in CC. We missed her, but spent a lot of breaks hanging out and sleeping over at one another's houses. We all recall our crazy weekend at my Mom and Dad's when our respective significant others at the time scared the living daylights out of us by screaming in the driveway and calling and hanging up repeatedly. That showed us all what our gut reactions would be in an emergency situation: April looked for the guns, Cassie hid in the bedroom, and I tried to be practical and call 911. Looking back on it, it's pretty hysterical, but at the time we were all pretty terrified. Cass is another lady that I am thankful to still have in my life. We can go a few months without talking and just pick up where we left off. It's pretty amazing. She has always been an amazing support in my life as well.
Next, there are my amazing college sorority sisters: Kathy, Jen, Denise, Kristine, Julie, and Christina. These girls were my rock through college. I have managed to keep in touch with them over the last 10 years or so and I have loved sharing their joys as wives and moms. I would continue writing amazing things about each of them individually, but I'm not sure that my gushing would do it justice. Suffice it to say that I definitely went to college to find my bridesmaids and not my groom and I have been extremely happy with my choices. I love them all so much. Even though I never saw myself as a sorority girl, I cannot imagine getting through college without them. They taught me about makeup, dressing well, philanthropy, and event planning. They also taught me about having a second family away from home. I love them for it and I am, again, so blessed to have such amazing women supporting me through this thing called life. I love you ladies! Here's to many more years of friendship!
